A "G" chromosome banding study of three cupped oyster species : Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata and Crassostrea virginica (Mollusca : Bivalvia) ArchiMer
Leitao, Alexandra; Thiriot-quievreux, Catherine; Malheiro, Isabel; Boudry, Pierre.
The G-banding technique was performed on chromosomes from gill tissue of three cupped oyster species : Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata and Crassostrea virginica. Identification of the ten individual chromosome pairs was obtained. Comparative analysis of G-banded karyotypes of the three species showed that their banding patterns generally resembled each other, with chromosome pair 3 being similar in all three species. However, differences from one species to another were also observed. The G-banding pattern highlighted greater similarities between C. gigas and C. angulata than between these two species and C. virginica, thus providing an additional argument for genetic divergence between, these two evolutionary lineages. C. gigas and C. angulata...

A new karyotype of Calomys (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Lima,J. Fernando de S.; Kasahara,Sanae.
The genus Calomys Waterhouse, 1837 is widely distributed within South America, being found in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. Specimens of Calomys were collected in Formoso do Araguaia, Tocantins, Brazil. For chromosome characterization standard staining techniques and as G-banding and nucleolar organizer region were used. The karyotype was 2n=46 and AN=66. The X chromosome is a medium metacentric and the Y chromosome a small acrocentric chromosome. Chromosome homologies with other species were observed. Probably, karyotype differences were basically due to Robertsonian rearrangements.

Chromosomal similarity between the Scaly-headed parrot (Pionus maximiliani), the Short-tailed parrot (Graydidascalus brachyurus) and the Yellow-faced parrot (Salvatoria xanthops) (Psittaciformes: Aves): a cytotaxonomic analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Caparroz,Renato; Duarte,José Maurício Barbanti.
Behavior, morphology, allozyme studies and DNA hybridization and sequencing data all suggest the independent evolution of the Old and New World parrots and support tribe status for the American species, although the phylogenetic relationships within this tribe are still poorly understood. A previous study has shown that the Yellow-faced parrot (Amazona xanthops Spix 1824) exhibits large karyotypic differences compared to the other Amazona species and suggested that this species should be renamed Salvatoria xanthops, although the relationships between S. xanthops and the other New World parrots remain unclear. In the present work, we describe the karyotype of the Scaly-headed parrot (Pionus maximiliani, Kuhl 1820) and the karyotype and C-banding pattern of...

Chromosome loss in bi-parental progenies of tetraploid Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Mccombie, Helen; Lapegue, Sylvie; Cornette, Florence; Ledu, Christophe; Boudry, Pierre.
Alterations of chromosome number have been observed in the somatic tissue of Crassostrea gigas diploids and artificial polyploids. Tetraploid oysters with abnormal chromosome numbers in some or all of their tissue are considered undesirable as parents either for triploids (produced via a cross with diploids and of aquacultural interest) or for tetraploid breeding. Aneuploid tetraploid oysters may confer the tendency to lose chromosomes and to revert to lower ploidy levels to their offspring. More directly, their offspring could have a lower ploidy because of potential links between somatic and gametic chromosome loss. The present study evaluated the phenomenon in six bi-parental tetraploid families bred from parents of differing somatic ploidy quality. The...

Alterations of chromosome number have been observed in the somatic tissue of Crassostrea gigas diploids and artificial polyploids bred in this species. Tetraploid animals with lower chromosome counts in some or all of their somatic tissue are considered undesirable as parents either for commercial triploids (produced via a cross with diploids) or for tetraploid breeding because (1) they may confer the tendency to lose chromosomes and revert to lower ploidy levels to their offspring or (2) their offspring could have a lower ploidy directly because of potential links between somatic and gametic chromosome loss. Chromosome studies in some Stevia. Cav. (Compositae) species from Southern Brazil Braz. J. Genet.
Frederico,Adriana P.; Ruas,Paulo M.; Marin-Morales,Maria A.; Ruas,Claudete F.; Nakajima,Jimi N..
Karyotypes of six species of the genus Stevia from Southern Brazil were studied, utilizing root tip metaphases. All species were diploid with 2n = 22 chromosomes. It was possible to identify each species by chromosome morphology. The basic chromosome number for Brazilian species of Stevia is X = 11. This number is also found in almost all South American species. We suggest that in Stevia there is an evolutionary trend toward chromosomal rearrangement, caused mainly by pericentric inversions. It was found that, in addition to aneuploidy and polyploidy, chromosomal rearrangements are common in the tribe Eupatorieae.

Combined association of Presenilin-1 and Apolipoprotein E polymorphisms with maternal meiosis II error in Down syndrome births Genet. Mol. Biol.
Bhaumik,Pranami; Ghosh,Priyanka; Ghosh,Sujay; Feingold,Eleanor; Ozbek,Umut; Sarkar,Biswanath; Dey,Subrata Kumar.
Abstract Alzheimer's disease and Down syndrome often exhibit close association and predictively share common genetic risk-factors. Presenilin-1 (PSEN-1) and Apolipoprotein E (APOE) genes are associated with early and late onset of Alzheimer's disease, respectively. Presenilin −1 is involved in faithful chromosomal segregation. A higher frequency of the APOE ε4 allele has been reported among young mothers giving birth to Down syndrome children. In this study, 170 Down syndrome patients, grouped according to maternal meiotic stage of nondisjunction and maternal age at conception, and their parents were genotyped for PSEN-1 intron-8 and APOE polymorphisms. The control group consisted of 186 mothers of karyotypically normal children. The frequencies of the...

Conserved number of U2 snDNA sites in Piabina argentea, Piabarchus stramineus and two Bryconamericus species (Characidae, Stevardiinae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Piscor,Diovani; Fernandes,Carlos Alexandre; Parise-Maltempi,Patricia P..
ABSTRACT The chromosomal location of 5S rRNA and U2 snRNA genes of Piabina argentea, Piabarchus stramineus and two Bryconamericus species from two different Brazilian river basins were investigated, in order to contribute to the understanding of evolutionary characteristics of these repetitive DNAs in the subfamily Stevardiinae. The diploid chromosome number was 2n = 52 for Bryconamericus cf. iheringii, Bryconamericus turiuba, Piabarchus stramineus and Piabina argentea. The 5S rDNA clusters were located on one chromosome pair in P. stramineus and B. cf. iheringii, and on two pairs in B. turiuba and P. argentea. The U2 snDNA clusters were located on the one pair in all species. Two-color FISH experiments showed that the co-localization between 5S rDNA and...

The bush dog (Speothos venaticus) is a South American canid, included in the IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) official list of animals threatened with extinction, in the vulnerable category. As a preservation and conservation strategy, specimens kept in captivity by Brazilian Institutions are monitored by a management plan. In order to characterize and analyze the genetic variability of bush dog specimens, a cytogenetic analysis was carried out, and microsatellite data were also obtained through the use of 15 primers, originally developed for the domestic dog (Canis familiaris). All tested primers showed transferability and amplified fragment sizes similar to those described for the canine genome. From the total...

Cytogenetic characterization of Aloysia virgata Ruiz and Pavan (Verbenaceae) BABT
Brandão,Aline Dias; Viccini,Lyderson Facio; Recco-Pimentel,Shirlei Maria.
Since previous cytogenetic reports of Aloysia have only described the meiotic behavior and chromosomal number of some species, the aim of this work was to provide detailed cytogenetic description of Aloysia virgata that would contribute to the understanding of the taxonomical organization of the Verbenaceae. Aloysia virgata had a karyotype with 2n = 36 metacentric chromosomes, all with similar size. The large amount of heterochromatin seen after Giemsa staining was confirmed by C-banding. Four nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were detected with an rDNA 45S probe in two homologous pairs and two sites of 5S rDNA located on one chromosomal pair were detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization. The interphase nucleus was classified as semi-reticulate....

A karyotype analysis of the electric eel, Electrophorus electricus (Teleostei, Gymnotiformes), a strongly electric fish from northern South America, is presented. Two female specimens were analyzed, one from the Amazon River and one from the Araguaia River. The specimens had a chromosomal number of 2n = 52 (42M-SM + 10A). C-bands were present in a centromeric and pericentromeric position on part of the chromosomes; some interstitial C-bands were also present. Heteromorphic nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) were detected in two chromosome pairs of the specimen from the Amazon River. The chromosome number and karyotype characteristics are similar to those of other Gymnotidae species. The genera Electrophorus and Gymnotus are positioned as the basal lineages...

Cytogenetics and sperm ultrastructure of Atelopus spumarius (Anura, Bufonidae) from the Brazilian Amazon Genet. Mol. Biol.
Siqueira,Sérgio; Aguiar Junior,Odair; Lima,Albertina Pimentel; Recco-Pimentel,Shirlei Maria.
The current taxonomy of most Atelopus species is based on morphological and color data only. Recent studies suggest that A. spumarius may represent a species complex assigned under the same name. Karyotypic data and description of sperm ultrastructure for 13 specimens of A. spumarius are presented here for the first time. A chromosomal analysis revealed 2n = 22 chromosomes, with centromeric heterochromatin in all pairs and a nucleolar organizer region (NOR) on the telomere of pair 7. The sperm was of the bufonoid type, presenting a filiform nucleus covered by an acrosomal complex and a mitochondrial collar in the neck region. The tail was composed of an axoneme, an undulating membrane and an axial rod. A karyotype analysis of A. spumarius showed the same...

Cytogenetics studies in thirteen Brazilian species of Phaneropterinae (Orthoptera: Tettigonioidea: Tettigoniidae): main evolutive trends based on their karyological traits Neotropical Entomology
Ferreira,Amilton; Mesa,Alejo.
The thirteen species of Phaneropterinae here studied can be arranged in four different groups according to their basic karyological traits. All of them share the same kind of chromosomal sex determining mechanism with X0(male) and XX(female). The X chromosome differs among species and always appears heteropycnotic during prophase I, it is the largest in the set and segregates precociously during anaphase I. Among the species, the karyotypes varies in fundamental number between 31 to 21. The meaning of these significant changes in the karyotypes in relation to the phylogeny within some large taxonomic group of species is discussed.
